What to include#
The more of this you send, the faster we can help.
- The player ID and nickname from the About and support screen of the app (open About on the home screen). The player ID is how we find your data. It is not shown to other players, so keep it to yourself. If you saved your player, also say which way you log in (email, Google, Apple, Game Center or Google Play Games), but never send a password.
- The app version, your iPhone or Android model and its system version.
- What you did, what you expected and what happened. A screenshot helps.
- For a score question: the day (dives run on UTC days), the prompt, and the answer you typed.
Common questions#
How is my depth worked out?#
Every answer has a share: the estimated fraction of players who gave the same answer. Its depth is 80 m x -log2(share). An answer half the players give is 80 m; one in a hundred is about 532 m; the rarest answer the game counts (one in ten thousand) is about 1,063 m. Your day is the total of your seven answers, and it lands on a real ocean zone: Sunlight 0 to 200 m, Twilight 200 to 1,000 m, Midnight 1,000 to 4,000 m, Abyssal 4,000 to 6,000 m, and Hadal beyond.
Answers also get a rarity tier from their share: common (12% or more), familiar (4% or more), uncommon (1.2% or more), rare (0.3% or more), exotic (0.07% or more) and legendary (below that).
Why did my answer score 0 m?#
Three reasons, in order of how often they happen:
- You skipped it or the time ran out. An empty answer scores 0 m. Each prompt has a 20-second limit.
- It does not fit the prompt. "Papaya" is a fine answer to "Name a fruit" and not to "Name a type of pasta". Answers that do not fit score 0 m and are not counted in the crowd.
- The check was wrong. An AI model decides whether a new answer fits, and it can make mistakes. Write to us with the prompt and the answer: a person can correct the verdict, and it then holds for every player.
The app says it could not check my answer#
A new answer is checked by an AI service, and that service was busy or out of reach. Nothing was stored. Type the same answer again, or a different one. If it keeps happening, write to us.
What counts as an answer?#
Two to 40 characters, at most five words, with some letters in it. We ignore capitals, accents, punctuation and a leading "a" or "the", and we merge typos and plurals with answers we already know, so "spagettis" and "Spaghetti" are one answer. Keyboard mashing is turned away before it counts.
When does the next dive start?#
At 00:00 UTC every day, for everyone at once. Everybody gets the same seven prompts in the same order.
How does the leaderboard work?#
It ranks players who finished the day's dive: highest total depth first, and for equal depths the player who finished earlier. It shows nicknames only.
I got a new phone, or reinstalled the app, and my progress is gone#
It depends on how your player was set up. If you saved it (an email address and password, Google, Apple, or the Game Center or Google Play Games account of your phone), open the app, tap Log in on the first screen, and sign in the same way: you get the same player with its progress. A phone that is signed in to the same Game Center or Google Play Games account brings that player back when you tap I agree. If you played as a guest and never saved the player, it lived only on the old device, and we cannot restore it, because we hold no email address or password to prove that it is yours. To avoid this, save your player from the Account screen of the app (open About on the home screen, then Account).
How do I save my player?#
Open the Account screen of the app (from About and support) and choose how to save it: an email address and a password (we send a 6-digit code to confirm the address), Google, or Apple. Saving adds a way to log in to the player you already have. It does not start a new player, and nothing is lost.
I did not get the code, or it does not work#
A code lasts 15 minutes and can be tried five times. Look in your spam folder, check the address for typos, and wait a minute before asking for a new code: a new code makes the old one useless. If codes still do not arrive, write to us from another address and tell us which address you used.
I forgot my password#
On the Log in screen choose Forgot your password? and enter the address of your player. We send a code, and you choose a new password. A reset also logs your player out on every device. If you did not save your player with an email address, there is no password to reset.
The app says "No account for this ID"#
Log in only opens a player that already exists, and the Google, Apple or game account you used has none in this game, so the app made none, and our database keeps no record of the attempt. To start a player, go to the first screen with the terms (it is the first thing a new install shows; after logging out, tap Continue as guest on the welcome screen, which always shows the terms first) and tap I agree. Then save the player with that Google or Apple account from the Account screen, and you can log in with it on any device (for a Game Center or Google Play Games account, I agree on a device signed in to it already makes the player from it). If you expected a player to exist, check that you use the same account that you saved it with.
The app says "Your session expired"#
A session ends when the password is reset, when it has not been used for 60 days, or when we end it. Log in the same way you saved the player. If your player was made with Game Center or Google Play Games, the app signs you back in by itself when the same game account is on the phone, and keeps trying later if it cannot reach us. If another game account is signed in, the app opens nothing and makes nothing: sign in to the right game account, or log in another way.
The app says the email address or the account belongs to another player#
An email address or a Google, Apple, Game Center or Google Play Games account can belong to one player only. We never merge two players, so the progress of one cannot be moved to the other. Log in to the player that holds the address or account, or use another address or account for the player you have now.
Can I change my nickname?#
No. Nicknames are generated and nobody can type their own; this keeps the game free of offensive names. If you really want a new one, delete your data (see below) and the app will give you a new player when you agree to the terms again.
How do I report an answer that offends me?#
In the app, tap Report next to the answer, and choose a reason. Or write to us with the prompt, the day and the answer. The Terms of Service explain what we do next, and how to ask us to reconsider a decision.
How do I delete my data?#
Open the app and choose Delete my data, or write to us. Step by step: Delete your data.
What do you do with my answers?#
See the Privacy Policy. In short: we store your answers under your player ID, a saved player also stores an email address or a linked account, a new answer is sent to OpenAI to check that it fits its prompt (never with anything that identifies you), and you can delete everything.
Accessibility#
If something does not work well with VoiceOver, larger text, Reduce Motion or another accessibility setting, tell us which one and where, and we will look into it.
